About ‘Uba Seo and Pamblo: Remembering a Forgotten Leader
‘Uba Seo is an art gallery located in Nevada City sharing the stories and history of the The Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan people. The Nisenan people (pronounced nee-see-nan or nee-she-nan) are native to the land we now call Nevada County and were subject to a genocide throughout the California Gold Rush and the early 1900s. The systems that caused such a atrocity are still being grappled with and the devastating effects continue to ripple through generations. Due to the calculated oppression of Nisenan culture, many artifacts, stories, and documents were destroyed leaving a fragmented history of the tribe. The exhibit Pamblo: Remembering a Forgotten Leader represents a significant step in the restoration of tribal history and the continuation of their culture, as the exhibit brings together the art works of tribal members and collaborators, historical researchers and archivists to tell the story of Pamblo (~1830 to 1905) who lead the tribe for much of the Gold Rush era. The exhibit consists of numerous art pieces, artifacts, photographs, and educational panels outlining the life of Pamblo and the devastation his people faced during this period.
The breadth of mediums and the diversity of artistic voice is truly inspiring, and we recommend everyone visit the gallery to learn first hand about Pamblo. Learn more about the The Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan here: chirpca.org/about
